The women’s section of the club is coached by Chris Motley, an ex-international player himself with a wealth of experience as a coach. Sheffield women currently have a team in the 1st Division and 3rd Division of the British Water Polo League (BWPL). The A team who play in Division 1 have a very successful history winning the national title several times and gaining entry into European competition, where they competed successfully against some of the best teams in the world.
The B team gained entry into the BWPL by competing in a qualification tournament in November 2015, whereby they secured their place for the upcoming season by finishing on the same points as the top of the table but runners up on goal difference, relegating several then current teams from the national league in the process This squad is largely seen as a development squad, it will give opportunities to both junior and senior players to compete in national competition, whilst offering a player pathway to develop and move into the A team when ready. It is the first time in several years that Sheffield has had 2 women’s team in top flight polo and is a gauge of the recent strides made in the girl’s/women’s section of the club.
As well as attracting players from different parts of the country, these teams are made up from girls who have moved throughout the system at Sheffield from monsters to academy to juniors to women’s. This is a very exciting time for the women’s’ section of the club.
For those considering trying water polo we would encourage strong swimmers, particularly anyone with good ball skills, to try our sport.
