Sheffield U17 Boys Take Silver in ASA National Age Group Champs 24th April 2016

Having come through the preliminary and qualification rounds undefeated Sheffield U17 boys headed for Manchester this weekend full of confidence for the finals of the U17 ASA champs
Saturday was the semi -final where we faced a real potential banana skin in the shape of Manchester in front of their home crowd !!
We were confident we could win if we could get off to a good start and impose ourselves on the game. This we did with some style taking an early 3 goal lead in the first 5 mins , and controlling the game from there on. With George Reader taking control of defence and dominating the Manchester centre forward and Connor Carpenter leading the line up front Sheffield never looked in danger and came out eventual 15-7 winners. In the other semi- final Sedgefield had come through a hard fought thriller with Caledonia, eventually winning 12-10 to set up a tasty all North-East final on the Sunday . Sedgefield looked a strong side with some very talented players –it was going to be a tough game.

Sheffield started the game looking a little shaky and nervy in front of goal . A couple of missed chances and missed man –up opportunities proved costly and we soon found ourselves trailing 3-0 , Sedgefield looked confident and bursting with ideas. But Sheffield had proved in earlier games that they don’t panic when behind and began to settle into their game –resume their solid defence and take their chances . At the half way mark the score was 4-4 in a game of high quality which was very evenly matched. The third period saw Sedgefield grab a couple of early goals to put us back under pressure but no need to panic. Unfortunately we then had a player excluded permanently for what the referee saw as a brutality offence. The ensuing penalty and two man up goals in the 4 minute exclusion put the game beyond us. The guys pressed hard to get back into the game –but that left us open to counter attacks which Sedgefield skilfully exploited and although we rallied bravely towards the end there was just too much to do –eventually losing 15-7

It was a great weekend of polo and the boys gave a terrific account of themselves to win the silver medal –losing ultimately to what was a very good Sedgefield side –We should all be proud of how the boys performed throughout the tournament and how they conducted themselves –being so gracious and sporting in their ultimate defeat.

Congratulations Martin KELLY

Martin has seen all but thirteen years of living, being involved with Water Polo here in Sheffield.

From days when the Sheffield Dolphins men’s club operated out of the pools of King Edwards school and Glossop road, he has been player, player captain, coach, treasurer, chairman, fund raiser, marketing man, equipment officer, negotiator, indeed anything and everything that involved keeping the sport alive and progressing through the many changes and upheavals that have been Water Polo.
He has also gained representative honours at county, regional, civil service level competition and “trialed” for international selection in his industrious time with our Sheffield club.
Never suffering fools gladly, although he made an exception for yours truly, his steely determination and resolve over the years has produced and is still producing, some highly motivated prodigious talent. This included his four children: Amy, Tom, Elliot and Oscar who have all made tremendous contributions to what seems like the family passion.
It has to be said that none of these achievements would have been at all possible without the “rock” of support that is wife, life partner, best friend, chief cook and bottle washer…she who must be obeyed…Jill, becoming involved herself in times gone by, as a sometime social sec’ and organising several successful Christmas “bashes”.
A committed driving force of a coach and mentor, Martin commands loyalty with the demands of structure and resolve from players. It has been the underpinning current of his desire to seek and obtain the best from his squad members.
Personally, the man has been a great friend and much respected work colleague, as our endeavors with the day job paid the bills.
On behalf of the club and mesen…such a deserving life member…cheers, ya ageing git!

Callum was delighted to win his Blue Peter Sport badge earlier this year. Sports badges are won by introducing a friend to a new sport, we set it up by asking Linzi and the other Monsters coaches if Callum’s friend Isaac could come along to training one Sunday afternoon. Callum was really excited about Isaac coming to water polo, and they both had a brilliant time.  Callum filled in the sports badge form that we got from the Blue Peter website and sent it off with a photo of the two boys playing water polo (see attached), a couple of weeks later he was beside himself when his sports badge dropped through the letter box.  Sunday water polo is a highlight of Callum’s week, ‘I love water polo, I’d like to play it every day!’ he says, and what about Isaac? He enjoyed it so much that he comes to training every week now.  Thanks Linzi and the other Monsters coaches!

Sheffield Monsters Water Polo Tournament

Eckington Swimming Pool, Saturday 10th January.

This was Sheffield Monster’s first ever mini water polo tournament. 14 teams from as far a field as County Durham and Shropshire converged on Eckington to play in both a shallow end and a deep end competition. Over 124 children played to a noisy balcony crammed with supporters!

Our fantastic team of club volunteers worked hard to ensure a smoothly run competition. 32 games were fitted in during the afternoon and the schedule ran to the clock with only 60 seconds between halves and the end of matches! Many thanks to all our coaches, referees, table officials, buffet organisers, sandwich and cake makers, raffle ticket sellers and of course all the players and the parents.

The deep water competition was of a good standard with most of the games closely fought and exciting. In the end Sheffield Black and Sedgefield came first and second in the league just ahead of Rotherham and met in the final. Sedgefield avenged a defeat in the earlier rounds to claim the trophy. Our Sheffield team played with flair and determination but just ran out of steam in the last few minutes of the tournament!

In the shallow end competition it was great to see both teams from local schools and clubs gaining an introduction to water polo. The competition was fierce and eventually it boiled down to a closely run thing between Renishaw Rovers, Sedgefield and Matlock. After a tense play off game between Sedgefield and Matlock, the final was contested by Matlock and Renishaw, with Matlock running out winners in a close game.

The afternoon was rounded off with a buffet and the raffle prizes before the teams wound their way home. Many thanks to our sponsors; Pinders (for the printing and the promotional banners), Williams Electricals (raffle prizes), Sheffield Utd Football Club (raffle prizes) and Feet First from Woodseats (donation towards medals). Finally a big thank you to Eckington Pool manager, Geoff Warburton , and his outstanding team who couldn’t do enough to help us throughout the day!

Sheffield 2002 team finish 2nd in Irish polo tournament

Clontarf Development 2002 Water Polo Tournament January 3rd-4th 2015

Message from the organiser, Nicky O’Meara:

I would like to thank all those clubs who participated in the Clontarf Development 2002 Water Polo Tournament and making it a great success once again. I would also like to thank all the club officials and club members & parents, too many to name, for giving up their time to help out over the two days with the shop and bench duty and refereeing and the referees David Mc Loughlin and Patricio Masip who officiated at all three finals.

A special thanks to Jim Tracey who put together the programme for the score board, we would have been lost without it.

This tournament has been very well supported over the last four years and continues to be a success.  This year produced a fantastic Premier final between Sheffield and Corrib A which went onto extra time and sudden death resulting in Corrib A narrowly beating Sheffield by 9 goals to 8. This year we had three finals that were all as exciting as the premier final with Newry Morne beating Clonard 6 goals to 4 in the 2nd placed Plate Final and the third place final saw Clontarf Celtic beating Corrib B 5 goals to 1.

This year the Leinster Branch water Polo Association provided financial support towards the pool hire cost which is very expensive.  The Leinster Branch officials also attended over the two days and Bert O’Brien, Chairman made the presentations.  I would like to thank the Leinster Branch for helping to support the development of Junior Water polo as this is the future of the sport.

It would appear that all clubs enjoyed the two days of water polo as the atmosphere at the pool was electric .

I attach a copy of the results over the two days and will arrange to forward on all the team photos.

I sincerely hope that Clontarf are in a position to run this tournament in 2016 and we look forward to seeing you all again
